The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) just released the results of its survey of athletic programs for the 2011-2012 school year showing that nearly 7.7 million students participated in athletics.
That survey showed that track & field is the most popular girls sport (468,747) followed by basketball (435,885) with cross country cross country coming in sixth (212, 252).
Not surprisingly, track & field (575,628) ranked second behind football (1,095, 993). Cross country ranked #7 with 249,494 participants.
Texas continues to lead the nation in high school participation with 808,806 athletes.
